Materials and Methods: One hundred eyes of 100 cases operated under retrobulber anesthesia were investigated. The Hertel exophthalmometric values of the cases were determined before anesthesia. Each patient had 3ml lidocaine as retrobulber injection. Hertel exophthalmometric values were obtained after anesthesia and compared with baseline.
Results: In the study group, 54 (54.0%) female and 46 (46.0%) male patients with a mean age of 67.7±10.7 years were considered. All the patients had intraocular surgery (90 cataract surgery, 8 trabeculectomy, 2 secondary IOL implantation). The Hertel exophthalmometric value before injection was 15.73±2.52 mm. Following anesthesia, it was measured 18.37±2.85 mm. There was 2.64±1.15 mm proptosis caused by retrobulber anesthesia (p<0.001).
Discussion: It was demonstrated that a significant amount of proptosis was caused by retrobulber anesthesia. Keywords : Hertel exophthalmometer, proptosis, retrobulber anesthesia
