3GOP Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Biyoistatistik AD., Tokat, Yard. Doç. Dr. Purpose: To compare the manganese (Mn), chromium (Cr) and nickel (Ni) concentrations of the lenses in senil cataract patients with and without pseudoexfoliation (PEX).
Materials and Methods: Twenty-five patients with PEX and 25 patients with senil cataract as control group, were enrolled in the study. Samples from the lens materials during the extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) were collected from all patients. The level of Mn, Cr and Ni in the lens materials in all group were assayed with atomic absorbsion spectrometry (AAS).
Results: The Mn and Cr levels in the lens of PEX group was significantly higher than those of control group (p=0.001). The Ni level in the lens were not significantly different in PEX group and control group (p=0.159).
Conclusion: Our findings suggest that some trace elements may play a role in PEX. Keywords : Atomic absorbsion spectrometry, lens, pseudoexfoliative cataract, trace element
