4Uzm. Dr., Afyonkarahisar Devlet Hastanesi, Göz Hastalıkları Kliniği, Afyonkarahisar, Türkiye Purpose: To compare the anti-infl ammatory efficacy of ketorolac-tromethamine 0.4% and nepafenac 0.1% eye drops for prophylaxis of cystoid macular oedema (CME) following uncomplicated cataract extraction.
Materials and Methods: Patients were assigned randomly to three groups in this prospective, placebo-controlled, randomised study. Group 1 patients received ketorolac-tromethamine 0.4% (Acular LS, Allergan); group 2 received nepafenac 0.1% (Nevanac, Alcon) and group 3 received topical artifi cial tear substitute ( placebo)(Start on operation day, continue 4 weeks q.i.d.) The incidence and severity of CME were evaluated by central macular thickness (CMT) and total macular volume (TMV) on optical coherence tomography (OCT) post-operative 1 week and 4 weeks.
Results: Ninety-six eyes of 96 patients were included in this study. The differences between groups in CMT and total macular volume on time pre-operative, post-operative 1 week and post-operative 4 weeks were not statistically signifi cant. The differences in CMT and TMV between 4 week and baseline were not statistically significant in NSAI group. In control group, CMT and TMV were significant higher at 4 weeks (p=0.04, p=0.024, respectively).
Conclusion: Used prophylactically after uneventful cataract surgery, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs were found effective in preventing macular oedema.
