2Uz. Dr., Kariyer Göz Hastanesi, Isparta - Türkiye Purpose: To evaluate our complications of phacoemulsifi cation surgery in patients with morgagnian cataract.
Materials and Methods: A total of 22 eyes of 22 patients with morgagnian cataract (group 1) who underwent phacoemulsifi cation surgery between December 2012 and May 2015 were evaluated in this retrospective study. Twenty two patients who undergoing phacoemulsifi cation cataract surgery due to nucleocortical cataract (group 2) were included as control. Pre- and postoperative best corrected visual acuities (BCVA) were compared. Intraoperative and postoperative complications were compared. Paired t-test and Spearman correlation test were used as statistical analysis. p<0.05 value was considered statistically significant.
Results: Mean age of patients were 80.41±6.35 years in group 1 and 79.00±7.31 years in group 2. Three patients (14%) were remained aphakic whom generalized zonular insuffi ciency was observed during the capsulorexis in group 1. Phaco burns were observed in 14 patients (64%) in group 1 and 3 patients (14%) in group 2 and corneal incision was sutured in these patients. Postoperative transient different degrees of corneal edema were observed in 18 (82%) patients in group 1 and 9 patients (41%) in group 2. There were no postoperative complications such as fi brin reaction, endophthalmitis and wound leakage in both groups. BCVA increased two or more lines in Snellen chart in both groups and difference was not statistically signifi cant (p=0.053).
Conclusions: Complication rate of phacoemulsifi cation in patients with morgagnian cataract is more than a routine nucleocortical cataract cases.
