Glaucoma and Cataract: Intersecting Roads in Surgery
Numune Training and Research Hospital, Eye Clinic, Ankara/TURKEY
The incidence of glaucoma associated with cataract increases in the older ages. Cataract is also frequently associated with pseudoexfoliation (PEX). It is known that antiglaucoma drugs increase the nuclear cataract in glaucoma cases. On the other hand development or worsening of the cataract after filtering surgery is a well known common late complication. As usually seen, glaucoma and cataract often has intersecting roads. When you plan surgery in patients with cataract and glaucoma together; the mean target is to control intraocular pressure and glaucoma, visual rehabilitation is a very important footstep. Some of the ophthalmologists prefer to operate both glaucoma and cataract at the same session and others prefer a two stage approach. We will discuss in this article how to manage the patients with cataract and glaucoma in the light of current information and our own experience.
