3M.D. Professor, Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, Izmir/TURKEY Purpose: To evaluate the accuracy and reliability of axial length measurements with IOL Master in silicone oil-filled eyes.
Material and Methods: A prospective study was performed in 31 silicone oil - filled eyes of 31 patients that underwent silicone oil removal surgery. To evaluate the accuracy and safety of axial length measurement with IOL Master in silicone oil-filled eyes, axial length measurements with IOLMaster was performed before and two months after the silicone oil removal surgery. Axial length values before and after the silicone oil removal surgery were compared.
Results: Mean age was 61.4±8.7 years (Range, 47-85 years). Of the 31 eyes, 11 (35%) were phakic, 20 (65%) were pseudophakic. The mean axial length was 25.29±1.34 mm (Range 23.39-28.65 mm) before silicone oil removal. The mean axial length was 25.12±1.26mm (Range 22.49-27.74 mm) after silicone oil removal. No statistically significant difference was found between the groups (p=0.077). In the subgroup analysis, mean axial length before and after silicone oil removal was 25.55±1.68 mm (Range 23.87-28.65 mm) and 25.50±1.34 mm (Range 23.78-27.74 mm) in phakic eyes (p=0.477), and 25.15±1.13 mm (Range 23.39-27.39 mm) and 24.91±1.20 mm (Range 22.49-27.30 mm) in pseudophakic eyes (p=0.049), respectively.
Conclusion: The present study shows that measurement of axial length in silicone oil-filled eyes with IOL Master is reliable.
