3M.D, Nigde State Hospital, Eye Clinic, Nigde/TURKEY Purpose: To evaluate several pre- and post-operative ocular parameters by ultrasound biometry in patients who underwent uncomplicated cataract surgery.
Material and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 92 eyes of 79 patients who underwent uncomplicated cataract surgery between September 2010 and March 2011 at Ankara Numune Research and Training Hospital ophthalmology department. A single drop of proparacain hydrochloride 0, 5 % for topical anesthesia, phenylephrine hydrochloride at 2, 5% is used to produce pupil dilatation without cycloplegia. A-mode biometry is repeated by three times and the average value is noted.
Results: 44 males (47, 83%) and 48 females (52, 17%) were included in study. 22 (23, 91%) of patients were in pseudoexfoliation (PES) group and 70 (76, 09%) were not. Mean anterior chamber depth (ACD) value in PES group was 2.871±0.309 mm, was 3.008±0.313 mm in non PES group; difference was statistically significant. Mean effective lens position (ELPO) in PES group was 4.369±0.212 mm, was 4.511±0.420 mm in non PES group; in eyes with ACD≤2,97 mm was 4.279±0.269 mm, was 4.749±0.362 in ACD>2.97 mm group; in eyes with axial length (AL) ≤23.28 mm was 4.294±0.271 mm, was 4.734±0.380 in AL>23.28 mm group; in eyes with lenticular thickness (LT) ≤4.50 mm was 4.412±0.374 mm, was 4.653±0.384 mm in LT>4, 50 mm group and all these differences were statistically significant. AL was 23.475±0.714 mm in men and 23.105±0.761 mm in women and difference was statistically significant.
Conclusion: Males showed longer AL. ACD and ELPO is lesser in PES group than non PES group. AU, ACD, LT are the factors affecting ELPO. AGE and sex are not. AL did not show any change after cataract surgery.
