4GATA Göz Hastalıkları A.D., Ankara, Doç. Dr. Purpose: To investigate the demographic and clinical characteristics of patients with advanced glaucomatous structural changes of optic disc.
Materials and Methods: The study included 100 glaucoma patients with advanced glaucomatous damage of optic disc according to the thinning of neuroretinal rim compared to the diameter of the disc. The demographic and clinical characteristics of glaucoma subjects with advanced structural damage of optic disc were reviewed retrospectively.
Results: The mean age of patients was 68.12±11.18 (38-85) years and the mean follow-up for glaucoma was 7.13±6.12 (1-15) years. The mean logMAR visual acuity was 0.54±0.39. There were no differences between the glaucoma types with regard to age and visual acuity. The mean maximal intraocular pressure was 27.89±12.45 mmHg and the mean of target intraocular pressure was 14.81±2.12 mmHg. Glaucoma surgery was performed in seventy-five percent of these patients.
Conclusion: These results suggest that the patients with advanced glaucomatous damages of the optic disc are in older ages and they usually underwent glaucoma surgery or had combined medical therapy. Because of the socioeconomic status, most of these patients had eye examination when they had poor visual acuity. Therefore they were diagnosed in the late stages of disease.
