M.D. Associate Professor, Numune Training and Reseach Hospital, 3st Eye Clinic, Ankara/TURKEY
Cataract, the first cause of blindness, keeps its priorty among surgical procedures. Quite satisfactory results are obtained with surgery owing to today's evolving phacoemulsification techniques and intraocular lens technology. At this point, expectations have been so increased that lens surgery is now considered to be a part of the refractive surgery. Although the main goal of the cataract surgery is providing the best visual rehabilitation, its effects on intraocular pressure have also been discussed for years. Patients with ocular hypertension and glaucoma are the main part of this discussion. In this article, the effect of cataract surgery on intraocular pressure, its adequacy and impacts on glaucoma will be discussed in detail, in the light of the current literature.
