2Ulucanlar Göz Eğitim ve Araş. Hast., II. Göz Klinik Şefi, Ankara, Op.Dr. Purpose: To evaluate the intraocular pressure (IOP) lowering effect of bimatoprost added to latanoprost in patients with primary open angle glaucoma.
Materials and Methods: Twenty one patients with primary open angle glaucoma inadequately controlled on latanoprost treatment regimen were included in this study. Bimatoprost was added to latanoprost in one randomly assigned eye of each patient. Control examinations were made at baseline, 1 month and 3 months of treatment. Success was defined as 15% or more reduction in IOP from baseline.
Results: At baseline examination, median IOP was 23.0 (range 21- 35) mmHg. Median IOP was 20 (range10-20) mmHg after 1 month of bimatoprost therapy and 20.0 (range10-38) mmHg after 3 months. The mean decrease in IOP was 3.7±1.4 mmHg after one month of bimatoprost therapy (p<0.05), and 2.7±1.3 mmHg after 3 months of bimatoprost therapy (p>0.05). In the adjunctive treatment, rates of clinical success were 38% at 1 month and 9.5% at 3 months.
Conclusion: While, bimatoprost had statistically significant additive effect to latanoprost at one month, the same success was not seen at 3 months. This finding confirmed that the combination of latanoprost and bimatoprost does not have an additive intraocular pressure lowering effect through period.
