3Özel Selçuklu Hastanesi Göz Hastalıkları, Konya Purpose: To evaluate the effects of phacoemulsification with intraocular lens implantation in patients with cataract on the quality of life and visual function.
Materials and Methods: This prospective study involved 104 cataract patients (56 female, 48 male) with a mean age of 64.78±4.47 years. Patients are divided into four groups according to the visual acuity of the fellow eye. All patients were evaluated preoperatively for visual acuity, visual function, quality of life and demographic information. One month after the operation, we evaluted the same parameters and additionally the effect size of the surgical intervention.
Results: Correlation analysis revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between visual acuity scores and visual function and quality of life measurements. Both scales showed medium to large changes after surgery, with the effect size range 0.66-1.58 for visual function scale and 0.53-1.14 for the quality of life scale.
Conclusion: Improvement in the visual acuity scores occurred within 1 month of cataract extraction. This speed of visual acuity recovery after phacoemulsification enables the improvement of visual functions and the quality of life, resulting in patients functional independency and recovery of health status.
