1İstanbul Ümraniye Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, Göz Kliniği, İstanbul, Uzm. Dr.2İstanbul Ümraniye Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi, Göz Kliniği, İstanbul, Doç. Dr. Purpose: To evaluate the corneal astigmatism profile and its correlation between ages in our cataract surgery patients.
Material and Methods: Two hundred nineteen eyes of 219 patients who had cataract surgey were included in this retrospective study. Descriptive statistics of patients including age, sex, steep K, flat K, mean corneal astigmatism, spheric power, cylinderic power and axis, axial length were analysed and correlated by ages.
Results: One hundred twelve of 219 patients were female (51.1%) and mean age was 67.08 years±12.60 [SD], range 18 to 87 years. Mean corneal astigmatism was 1.00±0.96 D and axial length was 23.36±1.77 mm. Both parameters were not significanly different between age groups defined as follows below 50 years. between 51- 60 years. between 61-70 years, between 71-80 years and above 81 years. Corneal astigmatism was equal to or less than 1.00 D in 70.3% of patients, between 1.25 D and 2.25 D in 23.8% and greater than 2.50 D in only 5.9% of all patients.
Conclusions: Cataract surgery patients seem to have greater than 1 D astigmatism preoperatively. In terms of correcting astigmatism during surgery cataract surgeons should know the astigmatic profile of the cataract surgery candidates and manage appropriately.
