3Dicle Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları A.D., Diyarbakır, Doç. Dr. Purpose: To evaluate the complications during learning process of phacoemulsification surgery.
Materials and Methods: The first 300 phacoemulsification cases performed by the same surgeon between May 2006-March 2009 were retrospectively evaluated. Peroperative and postoperative complications were compared among the first (group 1), the second (group 2) and the third 100 cases (group 3) of the surgeon.
Results: In group 1 peroperative complications were 20 posterior capsule rupture, 8 iris damage, 6 derangement of capsulorrhexis, 2 nucleus drop, and 2 descement's membrane detachment and postoperative complications were 10 corneal edema, 6 transient rise in intraocular pressure (IOP), 6 capsular fibrosis, 2 pupil irregularities, 2 decentralization of intraocular lens (IOL), and 2 bullous keratopathy. In group 2 peroperative complications were 8 posterior capsule rupture, 2 iris damage, 2 derangement of capsulorrhexis and postoperative complications were 6 corneal edema, 2 transient rise in IOP, 6 capsular fibrosis, 2 pupil irregularities, 2 decentralization of IOL. In group 3 peroperative complications were 3 posterior capsule rupture, 2 iris damage, 2 derangement of capsulorrhexis and postoperative complications were 4 corneal edema, 2 transient rise in IOP, 2 capsular fibrosis, 2 pupil irregularities, and 1 decentralization of IOL. Total peroperative complication rate and posterior capsule rupture rate in group 1 compared with group 2 and group 3 revealed statistically significant differences (p<0.05). Postoperative total complication rates showed decrease from group 1 to group 3 and it was statistically significant (p<0.05).
Conclusion: During learning process of phacoemulsification surgery complication rates and permanent damages reduces with experience. Keywords : Phacoemulsification, surgical experience
