1İnönü Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları A.D., Malatya, Prof. Dr.2Malatya Devlet Hastanesi, Malatya, Uzm. Dr. The use of topical drugs is the first treatment option in glaucoma treatment. The development of medical treatment for glaucoma has been occurred in quite a long period. It began with the discovery of pilocarpine in 1875, and today, it proceeds with many ocular hypotensive agents, which have distinct mechanisms of action. New concepts that can change the treatment perspective, as well as the pharmacological developments, have been focused. Recently, the concepts such as patient compliance, target intraocular pressure, diurnal variation of intraocular pressure, and neuron protection have been included in routine treatment protocols. Undoubtedly, certain principles of medical treatment should be regarded when the treatment is planned. The goal of the treatment is to protect patient's visual function and therefore quality of life with a sustainable cost. The treatment should be evaluated carefully in terms of difficulty, adverse effects, and financial outcomes for the individual and public.
In this review, it was aimed to discuss the development of glaucoma drugs and the main principles that should be regarded when the treatment is planned. Keywords : Glaucoma, glaucoma treatment, treatment principles
