3İstanbul Üniversitesi, İstanbul Tıp Fakültesi, Göz Hastalıkları A.D., İstanbul, Prof. Dr. Purpose: To evaluate central corneal thickness (CCT) with different techniques and assess the effect of corneal thickness on intraocular pressure.
Materials and Methods: Thirty-eight patients diagnosed with glaucoma and 76 control subjects were enrolled in the study. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured with Goldmann applanation tonometry. A pentacam and ultrasonic pachymetry (UP) were used to evaluate central corneal thickness in all subjects.
Results: In the glaucoma group, the mean CCT obtained with the pentacam and UP were 541±40 μm (476-619 μm) and 565±42 μm (486-658 μm), respectively (p<0.05). In the control group, the mean CCT was 554±46 μm (435- 694 μm) with UP and 583±38 μm (498-680 μm) with the pentacam (p<0.05). Corneal thickness was less in the glaucoma group than in the control group with both techniques. In the glaucoma group, the mean IOP was 15.4±3 mmHg in patients with corneal thickness less than 541 μm and 16.8±4 mmHg in those with corneal thickness greater than 541 μm with UP. In the control group the mean IOP was 15.5±3 mmHg in patients with corneal thickness less than 555 μm and 16.9±4 mmHg in those with corneal thickness greater than 555 μm with UP (p<0.05).
Discussion: In our study, IOP was higher in patients with thicker corneas in both groups. The mean corneal thickness was greater with the pentacam when compared to UP. Central corneal thickness should be measured with different techniques and corrected IOP should be considered for definite glaucoma diagnosis. Further studies are required to determine the best technique for corneal thickness measurement. Keywords : Glaucoma, Pentacam, ultrasonic pachymetry, central corneal thickness
