Materials and Methods: In this prospective clinical study we used two hyaluronic acid solutions with different viscosities (HealonGV and Healon5). We carried out phacoemulsification surgery in 52 patients with senile cataracts and evaluated the course of change in intraocular pressure (IOP) following surgery. The patients were divided into two groups of 26 patients each. IOP values were measured before the operation, after the operation at 2, 5 and finally at 24 hours. For all the patients in the groups, parameters like age, effective phaco time (EPT), preoperative IOP values and IOP measurements at postoperative 2, 5 and 24 were compared statistically.
Results: The two groups did not differ in terms of age, preoperative IOP and EPT. In HealonGV group, mean changes in IOP when compared to the preoperative levels were 10.38±10.70 mmHg at 2. postoperative hour, 6.77±8.11 mmHg at 5. postoperative hour and -0.05±4.85 mmHg at 24. postoperative hour. In Healon5 group these values were; 15.85±14.02 mmHg, 19.35±13.73 mmHg and 0.69±7.50mmHg respectively. In terms of measurements at postoperative 2. and 24. hours, the two groups were not different from each other. For masurements of IOP at 5. hour, there was a statistically significant difference between the groups (p=0.121, p=0.728, p=0.001 respectively).
Conclusion: In cases undergoing phacoemulsification surgery with Healon5, changes of IOP in the early postoperative period can be more significant. In such cases, ocular hypotensive agents can be used in an attempt to have a safe course of change for IOP.
