Materials and Methods: Twenty-four eyes of 12 patients, aged 2 to 4, with congenital cataract were included in this study. Patients underwent bilateral cataract surgery in the same session. Eyes were randomly assigned into two groups: in Group 1, anterior and posterior capsules were stained with 1% trypan blue, and, in Group 2, no dye was used before capsulorhexis. Controlled and complete capsulorhexis and in-the-bag implantation of intraocular lens were considered successful outcomes and were compared between the two groups. A complete ophthalmic examination was performed on days 1, 7, and 30 to evaluate postoperative complications.
Results: Anterior capsulorhexis was successfully completed in all eyes in both groups. Posterior capsulorhexis extended to the periphery in 1 eye in Group 1 and in 3 eyes in Group 2 (p=0.590). Intraocular lens was implanted successfully in-the-bag in all eyes in Group 1, whereas sulcus implantation was performed in 3 eyes with incomplete posterior capsulorhexis in Group 2.
Conclusion: In this pilot study, trypan blue enabled easier manipulation of both capsules without increasing the complication rate in pediatric cataract surgery. Keywords : Pediatric cataract, cataract surgery, trypan blue, capsulorhexis
