Central Corneal Thickness Measurement and its Importance in Glaucoma

OMÜTF, Göz Hastalıkları A.D., Samsun The accuracy of IOP measurement is crucial in the screening, diagnosis, and management of glaucoma. Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT) has been considered the gold standart for intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements for almost 50 years. GAT is accurate for central corneal thickness (CCT) at 520 μm. We now know that CCT varies greatly among the general population. Individual variation in CCT may lead to inaccurate GAT measurement. The average CCT for normal eyes was found to be 534 μm that acquired by both optical-based and ultrasound pachymetry. The IOP may be underestimated in thinner corneas and falsely elevated in those with thicker corneas. Falsely low IOP readings create the risk for misdiagnosis of potential glaucoma patients, resulting in missed or delayed glaucoma detection.
In this review, CCT measurement techniques, the relationships between IOP and CCT and its importance has been discussed by using the literature knowledge.
