2Trakya Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Göz Hastalıkları A.D., Edirne, Araş. Gör. Purpose: Comparison of central corneal thickness (CCT) in patients with pigmentary dispersion syndrome (PDS) - pigmentary glaucoma (PG), ocular hypertension (OHT) and normal group.
Materials and Methods: 31 eyes from 52 PDS and PG patients with appropriate criteria were included in the study. CCT measurements from 28 eyes with OHT and 30 normal eyes were taken for comparison. These patients were selected to be concordant with the PDS-PG group in terms of age, sex and eye. CCT measurements were performed with the Topcon SP 2000P specular microscope.
Results: Of the 31 patients with PDS and PG, 13 were male and 18 were female. OHT group was consisted of 11 male and 17 female and the normal group of 13 male and 17 female patients. The three test groups did not exhibit a statistically significant difference in sex distribution (Chi square test p>0.05). Average age was 49.4±11.8 in the PDS-PG group; 52.1±10.4 in the OHT group and 49.3±11.6 in the normal group. (Oneway Anova test p>0.05). CCT measurements taken with the Topcon SP 2000P specular microscope were 531.39±27.86 μ in the PDS-PG group; 550.86±29.85 μ in the OHT group and 511.57±30.31 μ in the normal group. Average CCT in the OHT group was determined to be significantly thicker than the PDS-PG and normal groups (One-way Anova p<0.05). Similarly, average CCT in the PDS-PG group was found to be significantly thicker than the normal group. (One-way Anova p<0.05)
Conclusion: In agreement with earlier studies, CCT in the OHT group was found to be thicker than the other groups. The mean CCT of patients with PDS-PG was thicker than normal patients. This finding might be due to the disfunction of the corneal endothelium, caused by the dispersed pigment from the iris pigment epithelium.
